At Vitalab, we understand the challenges faced by our international patients and aim to minimize unnecessary travel while providing world-class fertility care.
Here's an overview of our process:
Virtual New Patient Appointment
- Start with a virtual initial consultation via Zoom.
- During this session, investigations such as blood tests, a hysterosalpingogram (HSG), and/or semen analysis can be ordered to be conducted in your home country.
Coordinated Assistance
- Esmé Henning, our dedicated foreign patient coordinator, will guide you through the process and answer any questions.
Treatment Plan Confirmation
- Once your treatment program is confirmed, you’ll receive a detailed cost analysis of the prescribed treatment plan.

Medications:
- Can be ordered in your home country.
- Alternatively, medications can be purchased from Vitalab, and you may arrange for a courier to collect and deliver them to you.
Scans and Local Collaboration
- Treatment plans are developed in collaboration with our nurse coordinators.
- Scans required during the treatment cycle can be arranged in your home country.
- Vitalab works with your local gynaecologist to ensure the scan reports include all necessary details.
- For best results, it’s advisable to have the final scan prior to the egg retrieval performed at Vitalab.
Travel for Procedures
- Patients travel to South Africa for the egg retrieval procedure and stay for its duration.
- After the procedure, you may return home with any necessary medication for follow-up treatments.
Alternative Approach
- If preferred, patients may complete their initial consultations and required tests (e.g., scans, HSG, bloodwork, semen analysis) remotely.
- Then, travel to South Africa at the start of the female patient’s cycle and stay for two weeks to complete the treatment plan, including the egg retrieval.

We begin with structured and co-ordinated series of investigations for both partners to understand what the cause of the infertility is. Once that is established we work closely with you to develop an individualised holistic treatment plan in order to achieve your family dream in the shortest time possible.
In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF)
Is when the egg and sperm are fertilized outside the body by facilitating embryo development in a laboratory. The embryo is then transferred into the uterus to hopefully implant and become a pregnancy. IVF patients only need to be in South Africa for 2 to 3 weeks.
Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)
Is the injection of a single selected sperm into a mature harvested egg. ICSI is performed as part of the IVF procedure if deemed necessary by the doctor.
Pre-implantation Genetic Screening (PGS)
Aims to test embryos for chromosome abnormalities, such as trisomy 21, which causes Down syndrome and many others that cause implantation failure and miscarriage.
Egg/Sperm donor
If you are needing an egg or sperm donor, Vitalab will help you during every phase of the process, so that you can make an informed decision and choose the right donor for you. Vitalab also has an in-house egg bank so you can pick from donors who have already had rigorous screening therefore, ensuring the eggs received have the optimal chance of success.
